Monuments One Should Visit In Agra, India

It is always a boon for a person to be born in a city of historical value. You grow up seeing those beautiful monuments and hearing stories related to them. I belong to city of Taj, now you can imagine how lucky I am. I frequently get enquiry from people that where they should go once they visit in Agra. So I thought why not write a post for my readers addressing the same issue.

I am going to write this post in two parts.

1. Monuments one should visit in Agra.
2. Other places of significant values in AgraIn this post I am sharing information about monuments one should visit in Agra.

1. Taj Mahal:

A monument which needs no introduction. It is a white marble mausoleum located on the southern bank of the Yamuna River. It was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (reigned 1628–1658) to house the tomb of his favorite wife of three, Mumtaz Mahal.

ImageThe Taj Mahal is regarded by many as the best example of Mughal architecture and is widely recognized as “the jewel of Muslim art in India”. Beauty of this monument will make you fall in love.

2. Agra Fort:

The Agra Fort is also known as the “Lal –Qila”, “Fort Rouge” or “Qila-i-Akbari”, is the highlight of the city, then capital of the Mughal Sultanate. It is about 2.5 km northwest of the Taj Mahal. One can easily see Taj Mahal from the roof of Red fort and believe me nothing can be beautiful than this. ..

Image3. Sikandra (Tomb of Akbar the Great)

If you are travelling from Delhi to Agra than Sikandra is the first big monument of Agra which you will get see. Akbar himself started construction of this beautiful monument. This structure has a perfect blending of Hindu, Christian, Islamic, Buddhist, Jain themes.

The shape of tomb is pyramidal and consists of five storeys. The entire tomb is constructed of red sandstone but for the top storey which is constructed in white marble. Best thing of my life is that I can see this great monument from the roof of my house.4. Itmad-ud-Daula

Itmad ud Daula is the very first tomb in India that is entirely made out of Marble. It is actually a mausoleum that overlooks the River Yamuna and is a tomb of Mir Ghiyas Beg, a minister in the court of Shah Jahan.

It is also described as a “jewel box”, sometimes called as the “Baby Taj”,The tomb of I’timād-ud-Daulah is often regarded as a draft of the Taj Mahal.5. Chini Ka Roza

As a child I played a lot in this monument. As my grandmother (nani) house was near to this monument & no entry fee was there. But these days govt. is taking care of this monument with entry fees & it’s good.

Chini ka Roza is tomb of Allama Afzal Khan Mullah, a scholar and poet who was the Prime Minister of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. It is situated just 1 kilometer north of Itmad-Ud-Daulah Tomb, on the eastern bank of Yamuna river.6. Fatehpur Sikri

It was built by the Emperor Akbar during the second half of the 16th century. Fatehpur Sikri (the City of Victory) was the capital of the Mughal Empire for only some 10 years. The complex of monuments and temples, all in a uniform architectural style, includes one of the largest mosques in India, the Jama Masjid.

7. Tomb of Mariam-uz-Zamani

This tomb was built by Jahangir, in memory of his mother Mariam-uz-Zamani (Jodha Bai). It tomb is just 1 Km from Tomb of Akbar. Mariam’s Tomb, though largely plain, is a large sandstone structure with intricate carvings covering its outer walls. Unlike other Mughal monuments, the tomb has no domes and large chhatris top the corners of the building instead.

Beware! Try to avoid this place if you are alone.Transportation: If you have your own vehicle then it’s good otherwise you can always hire a cab or taxi. If your budget is tight, then it’s not a problem because the city transport is also very good. You can easily get auto or local bus to reach these places or destination.
