As a parent of a lively six-year-old (Aarav), I understand the myriad challenges we face in ensuring our children grow up strong, healthy, and happy. If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you’d know that as an infant and toddler, my son was quite chubby. However, as kids tend to do, he grew rapidly and started looking lean. Despite my efforts to ensure he maintained a balanced/healthy diet and an active lifestyle, I kept hearing the same question from others: “कुछ खाता नहीं है क्या??” (Is he not eating anything?) In such situations, mothers often find themselves doubting their choices and contemplating various decisions regarding their children’s healthy diet, supplements, and activities.
It is extremely important to choose what your child eats. It’s not just about filling your belly; It’s about helping them become healthy and strong. That’s why I’d like to talk to you about why it’s so important to feed your children healthy food and how Complan can help.
Understanding your child’s needs:
Every child is different. They like different foods and their bodies work in their own way. But as parents, it’s up to us to make sure they get what they need to be healthy. We need to make different types of foods that help children grow well, and stay strong and healthy.
Why is a healthy diet important:
Good nutrition isn’t just about avoiding junk food or eating a little bit of everything. It’s about giving your child’s body and brain the right things to grow and function properly. Studies have shown that good nutrition helps children perform better in school, stay healthy and feel good.
Here are some things that make up a good diet for children: (source)
1. Vitamins and minerals: Fruits and vegetables are full of vitamins, minerals and fibre. Try to have your child eat five different types every day.
2. Folic acid: Green leafy vegetables, legumes and whole grains like bread made from wheat flour, etc help in absorbing protein.
3. Protein: Foods like chicken, fish, eggs, beans and nuts help children build strong muscles. Dairy products or alternatives like milk, yoghurt and cheese provide children with protein, calcium and vitamin D they need for strong bones. If your child cannot eat dairy products, there are other options, such as fortified soy milk.
4. Healthy fats: Avocados, nuts, seeds and oily fish support brain development.
Apart from the above, here are some other things to keep in mind to inculcate good habits in children:
- Reduce Sugar and Junk Food: Candy, soda, and processed foods don’t provide many benefits for children and can lead to excessive weight gain.
- Drink water: Water is the best thing children can drink. Try to limit sugary drinks.
- Eat the right amount: Teach your child how much food is enough so that he doesn’t eat too much.
- Eating together: Eating together as a family is a good way to get children to eat well and talk to each other.
- Be a good example: Children copy what adults do. So, if they see you eating well, they are more likely to do the same.
