Ajwain Water| Benefits, Recipe, Dosage & Side Effects

Ajwain water, also known as carom seed water, is a popular traditional remedy in various cultures for its potential health benefits. Derived from the seeds of the Ajwain plant (Trachyspermum ammi), this infusion is created by soaking ajwain seeds in water overnight. The resulting liquid is believed to possess digestive and medicinal properties.

Ajwain water is often consumed for its carminative qualities, aiding in digestion and relieving bloating and indigestion. Additionally, it is thought to have antimicrobial properties and may help alleviate respiratory issues. This herbal concoction is easy to prepare and can be incorporated into your daily routine. While these potential benefits are widely acknowledged, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice. 

I. Benefits of Ajwain Water:

  1. Digestive Aid: Ajwain water is renowned for its digestive properties. It helps in relieving indigestion, flatulence, and acidity. The active compounds in ajwain stimulate the digestive enzymes, promoting better digestion.
  2. Relief from Gastric Issues: The carminative properties of ajwain water make it effective in alleviating gas and bloating. It helps in expelling gas from the digestive tract, providing relief from discomfort.
  3. Aids Weight Loss: Ajwain water is often included in weight loss diets. It boosts metabolism and helps in burning fat, aiding those on a weight loss journey.
  4. Anti-Inflammatory: The anti-inflammatory properties of ajwain may help in reducing inflammation, making it beneficial for conditions like arthritis and joint pain.
  5. Respiratory Health: Ajwain is known for its ability to relieve respiratory issues. The volatile oils in ajwain have anti-congestive properties, making it useful in managing cough and asthma.

II. Recipe

1. Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon ajwain seeds
  • Water

2. Method:

Step 1 – Dry Roasting: Begin by heating a skillet or pan over low heat. Add 1 tablespoon of ajwain seeds to the skillet and dry roast them until they become fragrant. Ensure to stir continuously to prevent any burning. Once done, remove the skillet from heat and allow the seeds to cool.

Step 2 – Crushing the Seeds: Transfer the roasted ajwain seeds to a mortar and pestle or a spice grinder. Give them a slight crush to break them open, releasing their aromatic flavors.

Step 3 – Infusion: In a saucepan, pour 2 cups of water. Add the crushed ajwain seeds to the water in the saucepan.

Step 4 – Boiling and Simmering: Bring the water to a boil over medium heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let the water simmer for 5-10 minutes. This allows the ajwain seeds to infuse their flavors into the water.

Step 5 – Cooling and Straining: Remove the saucepan from heat and let the ajwain water cool down. Strain the water using a fine sieve or cheesecloth to remove the seeds.

Step 6 – Optional Enhancements: For an added touch, you can enhance the flavor by stirring in a teaspoon of honey or squeezing some lemon juice.

III. Dosage: For most adults, a daily dosage of one to two cups of ajwain water is considered safe. It’s advisable to start with a small amount and monitor how your body responds.

IV. Side Effects: While ajwain water is generally safe for consumption, excessive intake may lead to certain side effects. Some people may experience heartburn or irritation. Pregnant women should consult their healthcare provider before consuming it in large quantities.

It’s crucial to note that individual reactions may vary, and it’s always wise to consult with a healthcare professional before incorporating ajwain water into your daily routine, especially if you have any pre-existing health conditions.
