mamaearth Charcoal Black Long Stay Kajal With Castor Oil and Chamomile| Review & Swatches

November 28, 2023 by anjali Leave a Comment

For the past 2-3 years, Mamaearth’s kajal has been a staple in my vanity, and recently, I received a PR sample of their kajal with packaging identical to the one I’ve been using. However, upon closer inspection, I discovered that it was the pencil version with a sharpener, unlike my usual retractable one. Despite the similar packaging, I noticed a difference in the formulations after using it. In this post, I’ll be providing a detailed review and comparison between the MamaEarth Charcoal Black Long Stay Kajal in pencil and the retraceable version that I’ve been using. It’s interesting to explore why the brand chose to offer the same kind of product in different variants and how the ingredients and performance differ between the two. So for better understanding do read my previous post on Mamaearth Charcoal Black Long Stay kajal (retractable version). The main ingredients mentioned on retraceable version are Vitamin C & Chamomile whereas pencil version are Castor Oil and Chamomile. In this post, I will review mamaearth Charcoal Black Long Stay Kajal With Castor Oil and Chamomile, More than a review it is a comparison post between retraceable & pencil version of the kajal/khols of this brand.

About the product: Let your eyes do all the talking with the Mamaearth Charcoal Black Long Stay Kajal. Mamaearth Charcoal Black Long Stay Kajal is Vegan, Ophthalmologically Tested, and is meant to care for your precious eyes. Packaging: This kajal comes in an easy fuss free packaging. The pencil is packed in a cardboard box (combination of white & green) which looks good. Box has all the product details mentioned. The bottom and cap of the kajal pencil  are white in color and I like it. The product is extremely small (slim) and thus it easily fits inside your  bag or clutch and thus perfect to be applied during loo visits (he he). The packaging of this kajal is luxurious.

My opinion about the product: After trying out the retraceable kajal from this brand, my expectations were set high for this particular product as well. The kajal comes in a sleek white pencil adorned with blue, green, and black fonts, giving it an attractive appearance. Included with the pencil is a matching white sharpener, essential for maintaining a sharp tip. However, this pencil kajal has its downside – sharpening leads to some wastage of the product, which is a drawback compared to the convenience of retraceable kajals.

In my assessment, the key factors for a good kajal are pigmentation and lasting power. This kajal exceeded my expectations in terms of pigmentation. It delivers a deep jet-black shade that sets into a matte finish. The application is smooth, without any issues of breakage. The kajal is highly pigmented, and a single swipe is sufficient to achieve the desired result. I’ve used it on both my upper and lower lash lines, and the pigmentation is consistently beautiful. However, despite its impressive pigmentation, the inconvenience of sharpening remains a factor, making me lean towards retraceable kajals for ease of use.

The longevity of this kajal is moderate; personally, it lasts around 4-5 hours on my lash lines, falling short of the brand’s claim of an 11-hour stay. It’s not entirely smudge-proof; a quick rub of the eyes can leave you resembling a raccoon. In terms of staying power and smudge resistance, I find it lacking compared to the renowned retraceable kajal. Removing this kajal, especially when used as an eyeliner on the upper lash line, requires a reliable makeup remover.  I love the fact that this kajal is fragrance free & doesn’t burn or sting my eyes on application. But I feel a bit heaviness on my eyes post application, to be honest I am not able to define this effect. So if you have sensitive eyes then stay careful.

The pencil starts with a fine point but after one or two use it is a thick blunt (even after sharpening you won’t get that sharp tip) so definitely not an option if you want a fine line.  It  is a good option to create smoky look. I personally found the retraceable version far better than this one in every sense. Even there is a huge difference between the price of these two. The retraceable kajal is tagged at ₹ 299 whereas this one at ₹499. So without any doubt I will go for the retraceable one 🙂

What I like about this product….

  • Beautiful packaging.
  • Jet black colour.
  • Has a nice texture & glides smoothly.
  • Doesn’t sting my eyes.
  • Comes with the sharpner.

What I do not like about this product…..

  • A bit pricey.
  • Difficult to find in local store or market.
  • Not completely smudge proof.
  • Staying power is not as per claim.
  • Not completely water proof.
